Ekplorasi harus dilakukan dalam upaya melokalisir daerah prospek batubara dan cadangan secara kasar. Untuk mendapatkan cadangan batubara yang lebih akurat perlu dilakukan pengeboran pada beberapa titik lokasi sehingga dapat diketahui kedalaman, ketebalan, dan persebaran batubara. Tujuan penelitian adalah untuk mengetahui kedalaman, ketebalan dan persebaran batubara PT. Petro Naga Jaya Gemilang didaerah Kutai Lama, Kecamatan Anggana, Kabupaten Kutai Kartanegara, Provinsi Kalimantan Timur. Metode penelitian yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah pengambilan data geologi atas permukaan (geological surface mapping) melalui kegiatan pemetaan pada lokasi penelitian sehingga mendapatkan litologi batuan baik litotogi batuan umum, batuan penciri batubara dan batuara itu sendiri, kemudian Pengambilan data geologi bawah permukaan (sub surface) melalui kegiatan pengeboran sehingga didapatkan data geologi bawah permukaan secara vertikal dan contoh batuan/litologi. Hasil dari penelitian meliputi ketebalan batubara, kedalaman batubara berdasarkan data pemboran.
