Secara geografis berada pada koordinat 7°19'21.00" LS - 7° 24' 14.00" LS dan 111°01'56.60" BT - 111°05'12.36" BT yang tercakup dalam lembar Gesi dan Sragen, Kabupaten Sragen, Provinsi Jawa Tengah, lembar peta nomor 1508 – 413 dan 1508 – 411, sekala 1: 25.000 dengan zona UTM 49, serta luas daerah telitian 6 x 9 km2. Daerah penelitian merupakan perbatasan antara zona Kendeng dan zona Solo (van Bemmelen, 1949). Bagian utara daerah penelitian merupakan bagian dari zona Kendeng sedangkan bagian tengah sampai selatan dari daerah penelitian merupakan zona Solo. Satuan bentang alam di daerah penelitian terdiri dari Satuan Geomorfologi Perbukitan-Bergelombang Lemah Struktural (S8), Satuan Geomorfologi Dataran Denudasional (D5), dan Satuan Geomorfologi Fluvial- Tubuh Sungai (F1) dengan pola pengaliran sub dendritik yang dominan, serta stadia daerah dominan dewasa (maturity). Stratigrafi daerah penelitian dari tua ke muda , adalah; 1) satuan batupasir karbonatan Kerek (N13 – N17), 2) satuan batulempung karbonatan Kalibeng (N17 – N21), 3) satuan batugamping Klitik (N20 – N21), 4) satuan konglomerat Lawu (Holosen), 5) satuan tuf Lawu (Holosen), dan endapan aluvial. Struktur geologi yang dijumpai di daerah penelitian, yaitu; 1) Sesar mendatar mengkanan Sungai Tangen, 2) Sesar mendatar mengkanan Dukuh 1, 3) Sesar mendatar mengkiri Dukuh 2, 4) Sesar mendatar mengkiri Bengawan Solo, 5) Sesar mendatar mengkanan Jaipoh, 6) Sesar mendatar mengkiri Kali Precet 1, 7) Sesar mendatar mengkiri Kali Precet 2, 8) Sesar mendatar mengkiri Kali Precet 3. Analisis asosiasi fasies menunjukkan bahwa pada MS-1 masuk ke dalam lingkungan pengendapan smooth portion of suprafan lobes on mid fan dan channelled-smooth portion of suprafan lobe on mid fan (Walker, 1978). Asosiasi fasies pada MS-2 masuk ke dalam smooth portion of suprafan lobes on mid fan dan lower fan (Walker, 1978).
